It is only a two hour drive for us from Auckland via Paeoroa and the Karangake Gorge. Two places that are worth stopping at. The Gorge has interesting walks and mining tunnels that are fun to explore with torches. You can choose from a variety of walks in the Coromandel region, no matter where you stay.
From the main car park, you have several walking options including short and long walks. Dogs on leads are permitted on these tracks. Windows Walk (1 hour round trip) This is my favourite short walk and one the kids will love! With windows blasted through the gold mining tunnels, these provide incredible views over the Waitewheta river.

About two hours outside of Auckland, Karangake Gorge Historic Walkway in Karangake, New Zealand, used to be a gold mine in the late 1800s through the early 1900s. Today, it''s an eerie hiking spot complete with rusty mining equipment, pitchblack tunnels, and abandoned train tracks to nowhere.
The Windows Walk trail leads you through the goldmining trail dating back to the 1880s, including remains of the old Talisman Battery Plant. Or, venture deep down into the Karangake Tunnels which take you along the old underground railway track used for mining back in the days. Pro tip: take a torch.

With turquoise river rushing through the gorge, a huge amount of caves, swing bridges, bike tracks, tunnels and historical relics, it is not surprising that the Karangeke Gorge is one of the most popular spots in the area.
The Coromandel and Bay of Plenty area has many fine documented walks, and brochures are available from various information sites including Katikati, Waihi and Whangamata.. Easter 2013 our small group did three walks: Wentworth Falls (near Whangamata) follows the stream to the lookout and top of the Falls. It is a steady climb through native bush. Well worth the effort.
