However, during the last thirty years of the 20th century tins relative importance to Malaysias economy steadily declined as the countrys exports increasingly diversified. Tin exports accounted for about 20 per cent of gross export earnings in 1970, declining to less than 10 per cent in 1980, and by the late 1990s contributed less than one per cent.
