Among the nonmetallic minerals, limestone and marble accounted for about 39 and 29 percent, respectively (Figure 2). In terms of chromite resources, the Philippines is also one of the most endowed countries. In fact, the country''s refractory chromite resource in Zambales is considered as one of the largest in the world.
The country has 44 mining companies of which 37 are operating mines six gold mines, three copper mines and 28 nickel mines as well as 65 nonmetallic mining companies. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has been undertaking an audit to ensure these companies are ISO14001 compliant.
