On state land, panners are prospectors and hobbyists: No commercial activity allowed. State and private land used for gold panning still needs to be permitted, which is done through groups such as the Gold Prospectors Association of America. Once a permit is issued, anyone can pan.
Gold mining has not been extensive in Texas, as the occurrence of the metal is limited. Main production, confined to the Presidio and Hazel mines in West Texas and the Heath mine in the Llano district, amounted to a total of 8,277 fine ounces by 1942 and was valued at 233,499.

San Antonio, Texas, June 18 A rich discovery of gold and silver is reported from Burnett county near the Pack Saddle mountains. The vein is four feet wide and consists of rich decomposed ore, strained with iron. Traces of an old Mexican mine and furnaces were found, and it is thought that these are the Lost San Saba mines.
Some prospects have been excavated for gold on the Llano Uplift of central Texas.
